Morton crushes Seagraves, 15-4

The Morton Maidens hosted the Seagraves Lady Eagles for a district softball matchup this past Saturday, resulting in the Maidens crushing them 15-4 across five innings.

Morton took a 4-2 in the first inning, and then both teams would go scoreless in the next three frames before the flood gates opened in fifth inning, where the Maidens outscored the Lady Eagles 11-2 to secure the win. As a team, Morton bested Seagraves 5-1 in hits and 4-6 in errors, and the teams tied at five walks drawn a piece.

"We put the ball in play early, but credit to Seagraves for keeping it close for most of the game and making plays," Morton Head Softball Coach Martin Adams said. "I knew we were due for a big inning. That inning came in a timely manner as we took advantage of Seagraves' pitching change. Audrie Garcia pitched another solid game, and our defense was able to keep it close with plays of our own. I'm proud of our girls and how they played. It was a big district win for us."

Garcia pitched a phenomenal game, tossing five innings and allowing zero earned runs while striking out seven batters, and the Maidens offense backed up that performance.

Standouts at the plate for Morton included catcher Maya Huckabee going ¾ with four runs-batted-in, three runs scored, three stolen bases and two doubles, shortstop Aubree Ramon going ¼ with two RBI's, a run scored and a stolen base, Garcia with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk, center fielder J'Lynn Marquez with two runs scored, two walks and an RBI, and Ada Torres with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

The win improves the Maidens to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in district play. They'll be back in action early in the week against the Sundown Roughettes before enjoying a weekend off for Spring Break.
