Sundown boys golf qualifies for State Tournament

The Sundown Roughnecks and Ropes Eagles golf teams competed at the 2A Region 1 Golf Tournament this past Monday and Tuesday at the Palo Duro Golf Course, resulting in both teams finishing top 10 and the Roughnecks qualifying for the State Tournament as a team.

The Roughnecks placed third as a team with an overall score of 658, punching their ticket to State for the third year in a row. They were led by Isaiah Igo, who finished as the Regional Runner-Up after shooting a 139. He was followed by Drew Igo shooting a 154 to place sixth, Brock Bufe shooting a 181 to place 43rd, Landry Farrar shooting a 186 to place 55th and Axel Garcia shooting a 189 to place 61st.

“I’m so proud of the boys. These guys had to battle the tough West Texas wind and mount a comeback on day two,” Sundown Head Golf Coach Kyle Igo said. “All five guys played really solidly, showed a lot of toughness and found ways to manufacture a score when we needed it. Qualifying for a State Tournament is a special thing, and to do it three years in a row is pretty awesome and blessing. These guys are preparing to go down to Austin and compete at a high level, and we give all the glory to the Lord.”

The Roughnecks will compete at the State Tournament on April 27-28 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course.

And while the Eagles didn’t quite qualify for State, they still put together a great effort at Regionals, placing ninth as a team with an overall score of 719.

They were led by Cutter Stumbo, who shot a 168 to place 22nd. He was followed by Cason Kucel shooting a 171 to place 29th, Brett Amador shooting a 189 to place 61st, Ryland Kieth shooting a 191 to place 67th and Brayden Hogg shooting a 206 to place 82nd.

“I’m super proud of our kids this week,” Ropes Head Golf Coach Cameron Copley said. “In windy conditions, I thought our kids battled hard. We improved and played much better on day two. It was a fun week with a great group of boys.”
