VOICES Coalition receives $3,275 grant for Backpack Giveaway

The Hockley County VOICES Coalition has received a $3,275 grant from the Community Foundation of West Texas to fund the Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway. VOICES provides backpacks of school supplies to students in Hockley County who participate.

VOICES is a nonprofit organization serving Hockley County. Its mission is to empower communities to create positive changes in attitudes, behaviors and policies to prevent and reduce at-risk behavior in youth with a unified focus on alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs.

The Community Foundation of West Texas grant will be used to purchase school supplies that will be packed by board members and community volunteers and later distributed in backpacks to students in preparation for the next school year. “Preparing for the school year can be a financial challenge to many families,” says Donna Pugh, Levelland ISD Administrator and VOICES Board Member. “This program has been in place for many years and the need remains; we make the school supply giveaway a priority because it helps students and families meet the financial demands of beginning the school year.”

Established in 1981, the Community Foundation of West Texas is a regional philanthropic entity created by and for the people of the Texas South Plains region. The Community Foundation exists to improve quality of life in this region by helping area donors to give in ways that make an enduring impact on their communities. Visit www.cfwtx.org to learn more.
