Main Street sets handrail rules

The Main Street Advisory Board voted to keep the handrail project a membership benefit instead of allowing handrails to be bought at cost during a regular meeting held Thursday at Levelland City Hall.

The advisory board had previously approved the $2,500 yearly membership benefit of designing and installing a handrail but discussed the handrails being bought for $1,000 or at cost for members of the public before unofficially vetoing the idea.

The board also discussed the bylaws proposed by Main Street and recently passed by Levelland City Council. The new bylaws will decrease the Main Street Board from 10 members to eight with a quorum consisting of five members instead of six. The executive board will now consist of the president, vice president, past president and secretary.

Additionally, past members may be re-appointed for one additional consecutive term and if a member is appointed to serve out an unexpired term, they may be immediately re-appointed with the first full term counting as term one.

The board then began the board focus beginning with detailing the upcoming Mosaic Mom’s Pollinators event June 29. The event will focus on bees and local pollinators with a person in a bee suit and bee themed gifts.

The board focus also included discussing the recent Lemonade Day. After discussion, the board believes it would be best to host Lemonade Day on a separate day than First Saturday Shop the Square and promote local businesses through another event.

The fall community guide featuring Atchison Jewelry for 75 years of business was quickly discussed before hearing July 1, First Saturday Shop the Square and Chili Fest updates.

The Chili Fest is currently set to have vendors, bands and food trucks. Smith Auto Family will donate the cash prize for the winners of the Chile Fest. As of now, the vendor booths will be $35 for a 10x10 booth and a $25 chili fest entry fee.

Tania Moody then gave the Main Street manger activity report including the third instillation of the mosaic handrails. Moody said there will be over 100 mosaics in Levelland by the end of the summer and discussed the vacant buildings in downtown Levelland.

Moody also informed the board that Betty Hope will be honored at the Commissioners’ Court meeting Monday by receiving the Distinguished Service Award for the Hockley County Historical Commission by the Texas Historical Commission.

Moody concluded the manager activity report by talking about dates to remember. Studio K will offer $5 dessert and coffee during the Mosaic Mom Walk every Thursday. Food Truck Day will be held June 15 and the next Saturday Shop the Square will be July 2.

Justin Balderas informed the board of the Texas Rural Women Grant which will give 35 womenowned small business $10,000.

Balderas also informed the board of the public survey released by the Texas Broadband Development Offie to improve and expand digital opportunities.

Mary Siders informed the board of Levelland Emerging and Active Professionals mosaic restoration project. Siders said the estimate to restore one large mosaic was over $50,000 but LEAP has reached out the South Plains College and Texas Tech University to see if there is an interest from the art departments to restore the mosaics.
