MainStreet Community Planting Day set Saturday

Community Planting Day will be held Saturday April 29 at the gazebo on the Hockley County Courthouse lawn at 9:00 a.m. till noon.

Mainstreet Manager Tania Moody explained that there are 40 planters that need to be planted. Those participating are able to plant it in memory of someone.

“For instance, they may have a grandparent that passed away and they might want to say this is in honor of a grandparent or a loved one,” Moody said, “or in support of Child Abuse Awareness month or a certain organization.”

Moody expressed gratitude to Higginbotham Brothers for donating the soil and mulch that will be used during community planting day. Wildman Supply and Lilly’s Dillys will provide coffee and pastries for participants.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own spade or hand cultivator to community planting day. Gloves will not be given out; those wanting gloves will have to bring their own.

There are three flower options including Vinca, Sweet Potato Vine and Blue Daze to plant.

Historic Preservation Month begins May 1. The MainStreet organization is partnering with the Wallace Theater to give tours to the elementary and intermediate school students.

“We’ll take them around the square and talk to them about the historic significance of downtown and the buildings and what they used to be,” Moody said.

The Wallace Theater is also partnering with the MainStreet organization on events to promote historic preservation.

“We will be highlighting some different historic stories and some different historic people,” Moody said. “They can watch for that to roll out on our Facebook page and signage on the square that says ‘this happened here.’” 1st Saturday Shop the Square will have the first event May 6 at the downtown Levelland square. The theme is Salsa-De-Mayo and will include a salsa competition. Those wanting to compete in the salsa contest will have to purchase a permit from City Hall.

“It will require a special events permit,” Moody said. “They will need to come by City Hall and get a booth permit. They also need to check in with me by email at TMoody@LevellandTexas.org or they can call me at 806-598-2098.”

There will be prizes for the best salsa and best themed booth awarded at 1st Saturday Shop the Square.

“We have judges going around tasting the salsa and they will decide on that,” Moody said. “We normally do a judge’s choice and a people’s choice. We’ll have voting slips that will allow people to vote, and they can turn those in the voting box at the gazebo.” There will also be food trucks at the event including Anderson’s Grill, Outlaw Eggrolls and Sweet Frios.
