HCSCA meals on wheels volunteers

Hockley County Senior Citizens Association is seeking volunteers to assist with the meals on wheels program.

Executive director Shelly Baigen explained the association services 90 clients in Hockley County, but it has been difficult to service the entire county due to volunteer shortages.

“We ask anyone that has time to come out to help us deliver,” Baigen said. “You do have to have a valid driver’s license, your own vehicle and insurance on the vehicle.”

The association also performs a background check on all volunteers for the safety of the clients.

There are currently six routes being serviced by about 12 volunteers. The time to complete a route takes less than an hour.

All volunteers will have a brief training to gain a better understanding of what is expected.

Since meals on wheels provides for those 60 years old and older, the association tends to other needs as well.

“When it’s cold weather, a lot of them, their houses aren’t well insulated, so we make sure they have heat and stuff to stay warm,” Baigen said. “I know we’ve had maybe two clients having trouble with their heaters and stuff, so we went out and bought heaters for them.”

On holidays the association is closed, shelf stable foods are delivered to sustain the client.

Those who cannot volunteer their time are encouraged to donate self-stable or nonperishable food items or contribute a monetary donation.

Lunch is served Monday through Friday at the Hockley County Senior Citizens Association. A donation of $4 for 60 and over is encouraged, but not required.

Meals for those under 60 years old is $7 per meal.

Those wanting to volunteer can contact the association at 806-894-2228 or 1202 Houston Street, Levelland, Texas.
