Hockley County proclaims April Child Abuse Awareness Month

The Commissioners’ Court of Hockley County voted to approve the proclamation submitted by the Hockley County Child Welfare Board proclaiming April as Child Abuse Awareness Month.

President of the Hockley County Child Welfare Board, Carrla Jones, explained the Court House square will have blue lights and ribbons to increase the awareness of child abuse and neglect in Hockley County.

“We’re putting blue ribbons around the trees on the square and the blue lights that will be on at night,” Jones said. “They will remain up the entire month of April to increase the awareness of child abuse and neglect.”

The Hockley County Child Welfare Board previously held a blue and white balloon release.

“In years past, we’ve done a balloon release for the number of children that were in care from Hockley County,” Jones said. “We always release blue balloons for the number of children in care that year and we released white balloons for the children that died as a result of child abuse or neglect.”

The Court approved the donation of one used Equature Voice Recorder from South Plains Association of Governments to be used by the Hockley County Sheriff’s office in order to record the main phone lines.

The Court approved the action to go out for bids for bank depository for the county and approved the trade-in of a 2018 John Deere 770G Motor Grader to purchase a 2023 John Deere 770G Motor Grader through Sourcewell Co-op for use in Precinct three.
