LISD ensures ABC campus safety

Concerns have been raised regarding the current state of the portable buildings placed at Levelland ISDs’ ABC campus as school is currently in session.

With concerns being voiced through social media, LISD Superintendent Becky McCutchen and Assistant Superintendent Rodney Caddell offered further update regarding the portable buildings and the current safety measures in place.

Still feeling the effects of supply chain issues, the district is one of the entities waiting for items to come in for installation. A handful of those items include fencing, cameras, a PA system and hand rails.

In regard to student and faculty safety, McCutchen stated that the campus does have a fulltime resource officer stationed along with security cameras that have already been installed along the exterior and interior of the main building which sits closely to the portable buildings.

In addition to the stationed resource officer, the school district as a whole is considered a “Guardian” district which allows qualified and trained staff to posses firearms in the case of dire emergencies.

In turn, the district is also considered a “Locked-Door” district which means any campus within the district does not require fencing as all doors are required to be locked within any campus which include exterior doors and classroom doors.

Caddell did explain that the option to place fencing around the portables is something the district desired for an extra layer of safety. Caddell also added that the district expects the fencing that will surround the portables along with a handful of cameras and PA system to arrive within the next two weeks and will be immediately installed.

McCutchen and Caddell have been on the ABC campus observing the classroom transitions and have been pleased with the operation. McCutchen explained that the resource officer on the campus has been monitoring the transition of classes along with teaching staff.

Conditions of the portables have also come into question and both administrators explained that each portable has gone under extensive work to be comfortable for students and faculty. New HVAC systems have been placed in each portable along with new roofs and ceilings. The insides were gutted and refurbished and the teachers who are stationed in the buildings have shared their excitement as they were moved into them on a volunteer basis.

At this point in time, administration for the district has not received any complaints from faculty or staff. However, anyone who desires to know more or voice their concerns can contact the administration building to set of a one-on-one meeting if desired.
