The Anton Lady Bulldogs came from behind to take a 27-19 home win from the Whitharral Lady Panthers, who are playing a junior varsity schedule due to low numbers, last Tuesday in high school girls’ basketball action.
Whitharral led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and 12-11 at half-time.
The Lady Bulldogs led 20-14 by the end of the third period.
Anton’s Alyssa Mancias tied with Whitharral’s Madi Chavez for overall scoring leader with 11 points. She also had a rebound.
Andie Alonzo had six points, five rebounds and an assist.
Takrya Goree had four points and led both teams with nine rebounds.
Bridget Thomas had three points and a rebound.
Bella Juarez had two points. Sarah Carlisle had one point and three rebounds.
Miliana Castillo and Aspyn Cooper had one rebound each.
In addition to her scoring, Chavez had two rebounds for the Lady Panthers.
Tyler Parkinson had four points and seven rebounds.
Trinity Coronado had four points, a rebound and two assists.
Elizabeth Reyna had four rebounds and two assists.
Madyson Nickelson had a rebound.
The Anton girls will host Meadow on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Whitharral’s season ended on Friday.
Panthers
The Whitharral Panthers got rolling early and cruised to a 69-40 road win over the Anton Bulldogs last Tuesday in UIL district 7-1A high school boys’ basketball action.
The Panthers led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, but shut the Bulldogs down in the second for a 32-17 half-time lead.
Whitharral was up 49-28 at the end of the third period.
All Whitharral players scored in the game. Kaden Smith led all scorers with 14 points.
Shamadrick Weaver and Nomar Gomez had 10 each. Jarrett Fryar had 11 points. Jeryn Ellerd had nine. Brent Robinson had seven. Dawson Rodgers and Jack Griffin had four each.
Gavin Martinez and Jose Avalos led the Bulldogs with 12 points each. Joe Whillock had 10 and Gage Garcia had six.
The Panthers will host Amherst on Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. while Anton will host Meadow at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Maidens
The Morton Maidens buried the visiting Meadow Lady Broncos 62-38 in UIL district 71A high school girls’ basketball action last Tuesday.
The Maidens jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter and were ahead 29-16 by half-time.
Morton was up 46-24 by the end of the third quarter.
Malory Alvarez led all scorers with 25 points. Kayleigh Boggs had 15. Clarissa Holland had nine. Lali Navarette had eight points. Destiny Viscarra and Amberlyne Hernandez had two each. Kaley Ornelas had one.
The Maidens will be in Cotton Center on Tuesday to continue district action at 6:15 p.m.
The Morton Indians pulled off a 23-16 fourth quarter, but it wasn’t quite enough as the hosting Amherst Bulldogs took a 53-49 UIL district 7-1A high school boys’ basketball win last Friday.
The Indians hit eight threes with four of them coming from Vicente Montoya in the fourth quarter.
They trailed 14-9 in the first quarter and 23-16 at half-time.
Amherst led 37-26 at the end of the third period.
Montoya led the Indians with 14 points. Lane Lyon had nine. Juan Rincon had seven. Alex Lopez had six. Cade Lyon had five points. Anibal Casteneda had four. Andres Bejarno and A.J. Mendoza had two each.
The Morton Indians held on to an early lead in a 55-44 home win over the Meadow Broncos in UIL district 7-1A high school boys’ basketball action last Tuesday.
Morton led 16-8, mostly on three treys from Lane Lyon and another from Alex Lopez.
Juan Rincon had a basket and Lopez hit two free throws for the rest of the first quarter scoring.
The Indians led 25-19 at halftime and 39-28 at the end of third quarter.
They hit a total of eight three point shots in the game.
Lopez had 18 points. Lane Lyon and Vicente Montoya had 14 each. Anibal Casteneda had three. Rincon, A.J. Mendoza and Cade Lyon each finished the game with two.
The Indians will travel to Cotton Center on Tuesday for more district action. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
