Time and energy squandered trying to find the way out of a place teeming with dangerous pitfalls is a high price to pay for going in the wrong direction. As I followed a popular and well-used trail, I was stupidly unaware that this main route might veer off into a maze of total bewilderment.

Dreams are an intriguing phenomenon. People often dream of being chased by monsters or other scary things. My mother had a great fear of roosters after being chased by one as a child. She was sometimes haunted by them in her dreams.

I spent years chasing things I thought would satisfy me— success, approval, control, and even perfection. As a young ballerina, I chased people's applause and the security of plans, although they often seemed just out of reach. Every step I took felt urgent but not always meaningful.
