Lobos take step back against Snyder, 30-0

Dropping to 0-2 on the season, the Levelland Lobos were shutout 30-0, in Snyder against the Tigers Friday.

A lack of offensive stability and production required the Lobo defense to set up camp on the field the majority of the game, resulting in the Snyder offense putting together 400-yard game.

With over 100-yards rushing and 296-yards through the air, the Lobos produced under 100-yards offensively.

Boston Winfield was tabbed with the start at the quarterback position, but was short lived as an interception on third down allowed the Tigers offense to put points on the board following the turnover.

Attempting gain back momentum on the offensive side of the ball, the Lobos would bounce rotate between Winfield and Rusty Johnson with no avail.

In the ensuing drive, Levelland would go four-and out, resulting in a Lobo punt. Continuing their offensive attack, the Tigers would score again with roughly four minutes remaining in the first quarter on seven plays.

Another stalled offensive drive by the Lobos allowed the Snyder offense to continue their push, but found little success as they were held to a field goal at the top of the second quarter pushing the score to 17-0.

Prepared for the Lobo run game, Levelland struggled to connect with the Lobo receivers as errand throws plagued their next drive.

Snyder would capitalize on their next opportunity with a sixplay drive for another touchdown to extend their lead to 23-0.

With seven minutes remaining in the half, the Lobos lack of offensive production continued to persist. A fumble following a positive drive by the Levelland offense cut their momentum short. However, the Levelland defense would respond and hold the Snyder offense scoreless through the remainder of the first half.

Coming out of halftime trailing 23-0, the Lobos would force a missed Snyder field goal. The third turnover of the game would come in the next drive as an errand throw resulted in a Snyder interception.

A 90-yard pass would result in the final score for the Tigers and push their lead to 30-0, in the waning minutes of the third quarter.

Levellands’ Noah Tienda intercepted a Snyder pass to give the Lobos favorable offensive positioning, but resulted in another Levelland turnover by interception.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-0 on the season as the take on the Canyon Randall Raiders Friday.

Falling to 0-2, the Lobos will look to regroup against the Lubbock High Westerners who are currently 1-1 on the season. Hosting the Westerners, the game will be homecoming for Levelland with a kickoff time slated for 7 p.m.

Coming off the loss, Levelland Head Coach Lyle Leong explained that the performance falls on the coaching staff and players as a whole.

“As a staff we have to put our kids in a position to succeed,” said Coach Leong. “If we lose or win, we are going to do it together as a team. We are going to look at what needs to be adjusted and put together a game plan that puts are kids in a better place to have success.”

Moving forward, Coach Leong added that losing a handful of players early in the season was not ideal, but that can not hinder the Lobos moving forward.

“We are a young team, that means there is going to be some growing pains when it comes to experiencing this level of play at the varsity level, but we have to have the mentality of next man up,” said Coach Leong. “We are still early in the season and have the time to get adjustments in place before district, but we are going to look at what needs to be changed and put the right kids in the necessary spots to allow them to succeed.”
