Lobos’ Arteaga shuts out Snyder in 2-0 win

The Levelland Lobos traveled on the road for a district baseball matchup against the Snyder Tigers this past Tuesday night, resulting in the Lobos winning a pitcher’s duel, 2-0.

Levelland scored a run in the second inning and a run in the sixth inning. In the team statistics, the Lobos bested the Tigers 6-4 in hits and 1-4 in errors committed, while the Tigers bested them 1-0 in walks.

The win was powered primarily by a stellar pitching performance from Abram Arteaga, who pitched seven scoreless innings, holding Snyder to four hits and a walk while striking out nine batters.

Arteaga’s full-game shutout marks back-to-back fullgame shutouts by Levelland pitchers as Jake Potter did the same in their last game against San Angelo Lake View, which is to Levelland Head Baseball Coach Chris Portwood’s liking.

“I’m extremely proud of these young men on stepping into themselves and having the confidence in their defense and in the team,” Coach Portwood said. “This group is writing a wonderful story this year; they all have tied to their teammates and believe in all the little rocks that have built up the Lobo Baseball program. They are representing our program with a standard that has been upheld for the last decade, and we are excited to get the chance to keep playing.”

Along with Arteaga’s performance, the story for the Lobos in their win against Snyder was their timely offense.

Standouts at the plate included shortstop Jake Potter going 2/3 with a run-battedin, a run scored and a stolen base, right fielder Boston Winfield going 2/3, first baseman Kade Pemberton going 1/3 and second baseman Javier Ruiz going ¼ with a run scored.

The win improves the Lobos to 12-13 overall and 4-4 in district play, which ties them for third in the 4A District 5 baseball standings.

The Lobos return to play against Estacado over the weekend before traveling on the road to face Trinity Christian on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
