Sandlin qualifies for State at Regionals

Last week, the Sundown Roughettes and Ropes Lady Eagles competed in the 2A Region 1 Golf Tournament at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course.

The Roughettes finished in 10th place with a total score of 880, with freshman Jayden Sandlin ranking first for Sundown with a 176 overall score and placing fifth in the tournament.

Sophomore Maddy Medrano finished with a 215 overall score, placing 48th, sophomore Bethany Honesto with a 236 overall, placing 65th, and junior Addilyn Hord finishing with a 253 overall, placing 85th.

Sundown’s Head Golf Coach, Kyle Igo, believes the team’s performance stems from their quick improvement.

“The girls’ team played really well today, and improved by 40 shots on round two from round one,” Igo said. “Jayden Sandlin qualified for state medalist, I’m super proud of her hard work.”

Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles placed 14th with a total score of 988. Senior Mika Woodley is Ropes’ top finisher with a 242 overall placing 73rd.

Freshman Chloe Richardson finished in 65th place with an overall score of 236, junior Alyssa Welch finished with a 262 overall score, finishing in 87th place, and junior Karli Rhoads finished in 80th place with a 248 overall score.

Ropes Golf Coach Cameron Copley is happy with the team’s early success in the school’s golf program.

“I was extremely proud of our girls,” Copley said. “Making it to the regional tournament in just our second year of having the sport is a great accomplishment. It was a great week for our girls.”

While their season concludes, Sandlin is set to return on May 4-5 at the State Tournament at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
