The Sundown Roughettes squared off against the Sudan Nettes in a best-of-three softball series in the Bi-District Round of the 2A Division 2 playoffs this past weekend, resulting in the Roughettes sweeping them to win the Bi-District Championship. Game one took place on Friday in Sudan, where the Roughettes run ruled the Nettes 27-1 in three innings.
Sundown scored two runs in the first inning, 18 runs in the second inning and seven runs in the third inning. Sudan’s lone run came in the bottom of the second inning.
In the team statistics, Sundown bested Sudan 23-2 in hits, 5-0 in walks and 1-8 in errors committed.
Standouts at the plate included Jaelyn Dominguez going ¾ with eight runsbatted-in, two home runs and two runs scored, Destiny Garza going 4/4 with four runs scored, three runsbatted-in, two doubles and a stolen base, Brynly Gregory going 4/5 with four runs scored and two RBIs, Nayleen Morin going ¾ with three runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base, Camry Jourden going 2/4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Araceli Ibarra going 1/3 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk, and Avy McGlasson going 3/3 with four runs scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
Garza handled all the duties on the mound in game one, surrendering zero earned runs on two hits and no walks while striking out three batters.
Game two took place on Saturday in Sundown, resulting in Sundown winning 10-5 across seven innings.
Sudan took a 4-2 lead in the first inning and held it into the fourth inning, where the Sundown put eight runs on the board. Sudan would add a run in the seventh, but to no avail as the Roughettes secured the win and series sweep.
In the team statistics, the Roughettes bested the Nettes 9-8 in hits and 9-0 in walks, while the Nettes bested them 3-7 in errors committed.
Standouts at the plate included Brynly Gregory going 2/5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Morin going 4/4 with two stolen bases, an RBI, a run scored, a triple and a double, McGlasson going ¼ with two RBIs and a run scored, Garza with two RBIs, and Breigh Gregory going 1/1 with four walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Breigh Gregory handled all the mound duties in game two, surrendering zero earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out four batters.
The series sweep improves the Roughettes to 23-3 overall and secures the Bi-District Championship, also advancing them to the Area Round of the playoffs.
They’ll face the Gruver Lady Hounds in a best-ofthree series today at Highland Park in Amarillo. Game one is at 5:30 p.m., game two is at 7:30 p.m. and game three is to be determined if necessary.
