Maidens get huge win over New Home

The Morton Maidens played host to the New Home Lady Leopards for a district softball matchup this past Saturday, resulting in the Maidens earning a huge 16-6 run rule win across five innings.

New Home took a 4-0 lead through two innings before the Maidens would best them 4-1 in third and 12-1 in the fourth inning to earn the victory.

The Maidens bested the Lady Leopards 9-7 in hits and 7-10 in errors committed, and the two teams tied at one walk apiece.

“We started slow with a couple of errors. We had some heads up plays early on as well as taking advantage of New Home’s aggressive base running,” Morton Head Softball Coach Martin Adams said. “I would say that is the most improved part of this game. We stayed focused and didn’t give up too many extra bases or extended innings. Offensively, our bats were quiet early, but I knew we were due for a big inning. That inning was timely in the fourth. I’m proud of how the whole lineup contributed offensively and all of our girls for coming out with the big win today.”

Morton’s biggest offensive contributors included second baseman Aubree Ramon going 2/3 with three runs scored, two runs-batted- in and two stolen bases, shortstop Ada Torres going 1/3 with two RBI’s and a walk, Audrie Garcia going ¼ with two RBI’s and a double, catcher Maya Huckabee going 2/3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a double and a stolen base, Amaris Zapata going ½ with an RBI and a run scored, and third baseman Natalie Ramirez going 1/3 with an RBI, a run scored and a double.

Coach Martin would also commend Audrie Garcia for her performance on the mound, and rightfully so, as she pitched all five innings, holding New Home to two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out six batters.

The win improves the Maidens to 5-11 overall and 2-5 in 2A District 4 play. They’ll be back in action early in the week against Post before traveling to face Seagraves at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
