The Sundown Roughettes, Smyer Lady Cats, Ropes Lady Eagles and Whiteface Lady Lopes all competed at the Girls 2A District 5 & 6 Area Championships this past Friday at Sundown High School. The Roughettes and Lady Cats both earned podium team finishes, and numerous local athletes placed in the top four to qualify for Regionals.
In the 4x100-meter relay, the Lady Cats won the Area Championship with a time of 50.44; the Roughettes placed runner-up with a time of 50.88 and the Lady Eagles placed fourth with a time of 51.92.
In the 800-meter run, Avy McGlasson (Sundown) was the Area Champion with a time of 2:28.01 and Addilyn Hord (Sundown) placed third with a time of 2:33.20.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Adalyn Falls (Ropes) was the Area Champion with a time of 15.63; Makenzie Zapata (Smyer) placed third with a time of 17.55 and Arriana Soliz (Whiteface) placed fourth with a time of 18.10.
In the 100-meter dash, Kira Posadas (Smyer) placed runner-up with a time of 12.77; Emry Jourden (Sundown) placed third with a time of 12.84 and Bethany Honesto (Sundown) placed fourth with a time of 13.15.
In the 4x200-meter relay, the Roughettes won the Area Championship with a time of 1:47.21 and the Lady Cats placed runner-up with a time of 1:48.28.
In the 400-meter relay, Kinley Nate (Ropes) placed third with a time of 1:01.40.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Adalyn Falls was the Area Champion with a time of 47.56 and Lainey Sanders (Whiteface) placed third with a time of 51.37.
In the 200-meter dash, Elexis Robinson (Sundown) was the Area Champion with a time of 25.71 and Breigh Gregory (Sundown) placed third with a time of 26.65.
In the 1,600-meter run, Kaytlin Clausen (Sundown) placed runner-up with a time of 5:53.30 and Hord placed third with a time of 6:06.51.
In the 3,200-meter run, Clausen was the Area Champion with a time of 12:45.23 and Rhaelyn Bracey (Whiteface) placed runner-up with a time of 13:15.62.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the Lady Eagles placed runner-up with a time of 4:10.02; the Roughettes placed third with a time of 4:19.31 and the Lady Lopes placed fourth with a time of 4:30.91.
In the high jump, Ellie Nelson (Smyer) was the Area Champion with a jump of 4’-10”; Brylee Lauderdale (Ropes) was the runner-up with a jump of 4’-10” and Jada Hernandez (Smyer) placed third with a jump of 4’-10”.
In the pole vault, Posadas placed runner-up with a vault of 9’-0”; Mikah Woodley (Ropes) placed third with a vault of 8’-6” and Aynika Riley (Ropes) placed fourth with a vault of 8’-0”.
In the long jump, Ashtyn Burriss (Smyer) was the Area Champion with a jump of 16’-7” and Robinson placed fourth with a jump of 15’-3.50”. In the triple jump, Burriss was also the Area Champion with a jump of 38’-2.50” In the discus, Zailyn Wylie (Ropes) was the Area Champion with a throw of 102’7”; Dhaya Marinelarena (Sundown) placed runner-up with a throw of 86’-6” and Addison Bridges (Sundown) placed third with a throw of 85’-10”.
In the shot put, Wylie was also the Area Champion with a throw of 30’-7” and Alexis Brinklow (Sundown) placed third with a throw of 29’-0.75”.
In the team standings, Sundown finished runner-up with 147 total points, falling just five points short of the District Champion, Wink.
“The girls competed well once again,” Roughettes Head Track & Field Coach Jared Neighbors said. “The 200-meter school record was broken by Elexis Robinson, and the team race made the meet a lot of fun. We are taking 15 girls to Regionals, and a few have a chance to make some noise so stay tuned.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Cats finished third with 100 total points, the Lady Eagles finished fourth with 88 total points and Whiteface finished fifth with 33 total points.
All the Regional qualifiers return to action at the 2A Region 1 Championships on May 1-2 at West Texas A&M.
