Scoring 70 points or more for the third time this season, the Whiteface Antelopes remain undefeated after the win over the Westbrook Wildcats 70-24.
Trailing 14-16 at the end of the first quarter, the Lopes exploded for 56 points in the second quarter, pulling away early from the Wildcats.
Losing two defensive starters in the first quarter created a slight challenge for the Antelopes to play up to standard, but once the Lopes settled in, they were able to shut out the Wildcats’ offense the rest of the game.
“We gave up some bad angles early and gave up some big plays here and there,” Whiteface head coach Jeff Jones said. “When we started filling our run gaps and making tackles, everything worked out as we hoped.”
The Antelopes’ offense continued to produce at a high level, piling up 378 total yards, including 233 rushing yards and 145 through the air. Junior Jaxon Hodge led Whiteface on the ground with 105 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. He also added a 37-yard touchdown reception, finishing with 142 total yards and three touchdowns.
Whiteface’s defense also contributed to the lopsided victory, limiting the Westbrook to 154 total yards: 80 rushing yards and 74 passing yards, while forcing three turnovers.
Brayden Hinostroza came up with the biggest defensive play, returning an interception 64 yards for a touchdown.
With the Antelopes continuing to put points on the board and make plays on defense, Whiteface heads on the road to take on another undefeated team, the Borden County Coyotes, which is a matchup the ‘Lopes know they’ll take a lot from this game.
“It’s going to be a pretty fun game,” Jones said. “ I know we’re going to learn about who we are, so we’re looking forward to this challenge.”
