The Levelland Lobos struggled to get anything going against the Sweetwater Mustangs, as they fell short 44-0.
Sweetwater carried a 20-0 lead into the half after rushing in a touchdown with 59 seconds remaining in the half.
Levelland came out of halftime with their best scoring opportunity of the night. After a bad snap on a third down, Ethan Salazar collected the ball off the ground, scrambled out wide, and found Jake Potter for a 50-yard gain to move inside Sweetwater’s 20yard line.
Potter was able to get the Lobos down to the 2-yard line, but another bad snap pushed them all the way back to the 28-yard line. A dump-off pass to Noah Martin would get Levelland down to the 6-yard line before another wild snap was recovered by Sweetwater.
The Mustangs were able to run the ball the whole way down the field, eventually capitalizing off the turnover by punching it in for a touchdown. Their twopoint attempt would go on to fail, making it 26-0 with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter.
Levelland showed some life on the next possession after a Salazar first down scramble, but a Sweetwater sack followed by an incompletion on third down would force the Lobos to punt the ball away. Things only got worse for Levelland on the ensuing punt when a bad snap resulted in a blocked kick that Sweetwater returned for a touchdown. The Mustangs then converted the two-point conversion to extend their lead to 34-0 with 49 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Sweetwater added to their lead just 24 seconds into the fourth quarter when a tipped pass got intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Another successful two-point try pushed the Mustang advantage to 42-0.
Levelland was nearly able to find the end zone on their next possession, but a potential 65-yard touchdown pass slipped through the hands of the intended receiver, which eventually led to another Lobos’ punt.
Sweetwater was threatening to score again midway through the fourth quarter until Levelland was able to force a fumble and recover inside their own 5-yard line with 6:40 remaining.
Backed up against their own goal line, Sweetwater tracked down a run in the end zone for a safety, making it 44-0.
Sweetwater ran out the remaining clock to secure the victory 44-0.
This loss put the Levelland Lobos at 2-2 on the season. They will travel to Wildcat Stadium to play the Littlefield Wildcats Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
