One of the last places still free to the public are libraries. Let that sink in, because it is a powerful statement.
Did you know that getting a library card is free for citizens of Hockley County ages four and older? Where else can you do the things offered by your county that you can do in the library, and still have them be FREE?
At the library you have access to more services than just checking out a few books. You can use computers with internet, and free Wi-Fi. Copies are only 25 cents (10 cents if you bring your own paper), a copy machine scans to email, and your library can fax.
Literacy programs like our Summer Reading Program, Homeschool Storytime, and Morning Storytime for children that haven’t entered Kindergarten help promote reading and inspire kids with a desire to read. Libraries also provide free access to collections of books, databases and many other resources.
All these services are vital for a community to flourish. A full list of services and resources available can be found within the Hockley County Memorial Library. With community support, they can expand these services further to meet the community needs.
Everyone, regardless of income, should be able to, and can access information, knowledge and entertainment at their library. With the support of Friends of Hockley County Memorial Library, community members and local businesses, they hope to continue to enrich our county and the people within it. To quote Henry Ward Beecher, “A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life.”
