Levelland Horse Sale celebrates rebranding

The Levelland Horse Sale had a successful weekend, holding its official ribbon cutting and sale of top-dollar roping, cutting, reining and ranch horse consignments as well a top stockdog sale.

The event opened with ribbon cutting on Friday morning, welcomed by the Levelland Chamber of Commerce, city and county leaders, along with Steve Friskup, founder, CEO and owner and his team participating at the Mallet Event Center & Arena.

“We are incredibly thankful that this longstanding and respected event continues to call Levelland home and now proudly carries the name Levelland Horse Sale,” said Mary Siders, president of the Levelland Chamber of Commerce. “Beyond the sale ring, the Levelland Horse Sale is a major economic driver, supporting local businesses, hotels, restaurants, regional commerce and the western way of life.”

Friskup operates the Levelland Horse Sale, formerly known as the Clovis Horse Sale, often in partnership with the Charlie Rogers, with whom he has worked for over 30 years.

The sale moved to the Mallett in 2020 due to pandemic-related shutdowns in New Mexico and since been rebranded and has become a major, permanent event in Levelland.

The well-known sale draws hundreds buyers and sellers from numerous states.

Following the ribbon cutting, a stock dog demonstration began and then the Preferred Performance Session, continuing with the United Country Team Roping.

A Stock Dog Demonstration will follow at 9 a.m., then a Preferred Performance Session at 10 a.m., continuing with the United Country Team Roping with vendors throughout event. Sunday morning featured a church service for attendees.

Friskup reported a record top selling stockdog “Dax”, owned by Shauna and Kyle Dillard, for $$110,000.

The sale also touted the highest-ever seller when Matchboxx Twenty, a 2021 gelding by Inferno Sixty Six out of a Lil Joe Cash daughter, brought $110,000 for Cody Wheeler. Other horses were selling from $25,000, $40,000 and up.

Team ropers showed their rope horse consignments in the United Country Team Roping before heading to the sale pen. Winners were: 1. Casey McClesky on ICHIS Gypsy Moon and Hayden Powell on CS Mecom Tivio ($4,000); 2. Isaac Gholson on Hes A Holly Good Fella and Hayden Powell on CS Mecom Tivio ($3,000); 3.
