Newest parks addition expected to boost communities quality of life

The City of Levelland opened the recently completed pickleball courts to the public after holding a grand opening Wednesday.

With the efforts of the City of Levelland Parks Department and the Levelland Community Development Corporation (LCDC), the old tennis courts located at the intersection of 4th Street and Ave. D were revamped.

Taking on the challenge of doing the renovations in-house, Parks Director Dustin Reichelt explained that doing it themselves saved a lot of money.

“We took this challenge on ourselves because when we got prices to have these done it was substantially expensive,” said Reichelt. “We watched a few videos and talked to a few people that I know that have built these and we decided to do it ourselves. There were some days I wish we didn’t, but overall, I’m happy with the crew that did this and I think it turned out pretty great.”

Reichelt thanked the LCDC for being very progressive as they continued to allocate funds to projects such as the pickleball courts. Additionally, he thanked the City Council as they have the ultimate approval for the projects.

“I think everybody understands outdoor recreation and quality life things like that are very beneficial to people moving here and to the people that are already here,” said Reichelt. These things are good for the whole community.”

Phase two of the pickleball courts has already been approved by the LCDC. With the expected Council’s approval late August or early September, the next phase could begin after October 1 which would include three additional courts, picnic tables, a shade structure and the possibility of a few wind screens. Trash cans and additional site amenities will also be included.

Levelland Mayor Brean Buxkemper shared her excitement for community members to enjoy the new pickleball courts.

“We used a piece of property that we already had, and it wasn’t in the best shape,” said Buxkemer. “We’ve made it better and we’ve improved the neighborhood. It’s right by our skate park and my hope is that it brings more awareness to it as well. Maybe the family could split up since they’re right next to each other and enjoy both.”

Buxkemper also highlighted the location as it is adjacent from the Levelland Fire Station.

“Quality of life is so important. It’s what keeps our younger generations in our communities, and we can’t ignore it,” said Buxkemper. “Also, pickleball is so cool because senior citizens play pickleball more than a lot of people so that’s what’s so cool about pickleball itself.”

As efforts continue to be made to enhance the City of Levelland’s park system, Reichelt feels that the park areas have been very busy throughout this summer.

“I think it’s just because people value being outside. Our parks are definitely better than they were six years ago, and we continued to progress and make them better,” said Reichelt. “We’re seeing more people staying in our parks longer and hanging out. This is one more opportunity for the community.”
