Tasty confections served up at Lexi’s Bakery

cupcakes, oh my!

That’s what you will find at Lexi’s Bakery down Austin Street in Levelland.

Operated and owned by Alexis Nguyen, she has ran this business for about a year and a half. Nguyen started baking about two and half years ago when she was a stay at home mom and she heard a calling from God.

“I had worked in finance for several years and I left to have our baby, “ said Nguyen. “ I had gotten ready to go back to work and I felt like God kept calling me to this bakery over and over again.”

Nguyen had started baking at home because she was bored at home with her daughter and had time to spare to learn something new. Starting her business right at her front door, Nguyen sold cupcakes to get her started and slowly moved to custom orders. From there, people started to take notice and asked her to make their birthday cakes.

“I would tell them I don’t know how to make cakes, and they would be like you got this,” said Nguyen. “I was kind of thrown out there to do it. It was one of those things where anytime I put my mind to something I go at it 1000%. So I figured it out and after a year I opened the bakery.”

Even now Nguyen continues to learn techniques and strives to better her business. Originally from Brownfield, Nguyen has made Levelland her home since 2014 and continues to put herself out there to meet the community.

“I’ve met so many new people owning this bakery,” said Nguyen. “I have people come once a week just to purchase something to help me stay here. I definitely feel the love from the community.”

Nguyen makes sure to give back to her community as well. Last year she donated sweets to the special needs prom and she also adopted a senior. Every now and then if she has extra cupcakes she will donate them to the Youth Foster Home. She also started a Facebook group called, “Sweet Blessings”. She originally started it for bakers so the foster kids could get their own customized cake for their birthdays.

“I started thinking about it and I was like oh my gosh what if we just opened it up not just for baking but for everything,” said Nguyen. “I opened it up for the school year, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas and I had 40 new people join since last Friday.”

Nguyen is currently getting stuff ready for the kids Halloween party where they will be getting new costumes and getting to enjoy her delicious sweets. Nguyen sells cookies, brownies, cupcakes, rice crispies, cakes, layered banana pudding, macaroons and paninis. She also does custom orders for weddings, birthdays, Sweet 16’s, taste testing cakes and quinceañeras.

“I’m normally very honest if I think I can or can’t do it,” said Nguyen. “Like I said, I’m still learning.”

Nguyen’s end game is to either expand or just grow onto her building.

“I have the land to grow back. It will take some time but that’s the big goal,” said Nguyen. “I want people to come in and sit and enjoy their panini sandwiches.”

Being an introverted person, running this business in the beginning made Nguyen anxious. She wasn’t prepared for the hype her business got, but she also knew who to turn to, God.

“I felt like this year God is telling me that this was going to be my season of getting out of my comfort zone and really pushing myself,” said Nguyen. “I also have to thank my husband and sisters for helping me.”

Through this journey Nguyen hopes to expand her love of baking goodies throughout the community and wishes to continue meeting new people. Through her prayers and hard work she hopes to continue impacting her community.

“I will say I do feel like my business 100% from the very beginning has been a calling from God. I always listen when He tells me to do something,” said Nguyen. “He has such a big plan for us and everything that I’ve been doing with the bakery and with my kids I never imagined myself being here without Him.”
