...When good fails...

When I was growing up, drinking alcohol and smoking were two big no-nos. If you wanted to know if someone was a Christian, their abstinence of these two items was the first test. This was a guide for me through high school as I chose friends and decided the places I would go.

In my early years, going out to dinner was a rare treat. I remember one time going to a popular chicken dinner restaurant after Sunday morning church. After being seated my parents began looking around and discovered a bar in the restaurant. I was disappointed as well as a little bit embarrassed when we all stood up and sheepishly filed out of the restaurant. I do not remember where we ended up eating Sunday dinner, but you can be sure the venue did not serve alcohol. We were firm believers in an often-quoted Scripture, “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.” (Proverbs 20:1 NIV) As I got older, the medical field began doing studies and reporting the results of smoking. I found that my parents and church had been wise rather than restrictive. One would think the dangers of inhaling smoke should have been a no-brainer way before medical studies proved it. In addition, there were the occasional news reports of homes burning down because of a fire caused by a cigarette. It struck fear in my young heart.

As you most assuredly know, however, there are exceptions to most rules. There was one time it was not a benefit. And that was when the time came for me to marry. A lovely wedding was arranged. The evening arrived, and things went according to plan until just before the ceremony was to begin. Two of the ushers prepared to light the candelabras. But alas, no one had any matches. People were approached, (there obviously were no smokers), drawers were quickly inventoried, but nary a match could be found. I guess you could say the church and wedding was matchless! Fortunately, a quick trip to a nearby mini mart saved the evening.

In spite of the momentary panic, the bride and groom proved to be a good match. The marriage celebrated that day has prevailed for well over fifty years.
