The Levelland Independent School District Board met Wednesday night for their monthly regular meeting to go over various agenda items.
The board spent a considerable amount of time in executive session addressing several topics including a private consultation with the board’s attorney, discussion of professional administrative term contracts and additional topics.
After speaking with LISD Superintendent Becky McCutchen, she explained that the overall need for seeking the council of the board’s attorney was that the parents of a SPED student had filed a complaint against the district for an unknown issue.
In turn, the board would deliberate with their attorneys about pending litigation against the district involving a SPED student.
Due to confidentiality laws, and to be mindful of individuals’ rights to privacy, not much information is available at this point.
The board had retired to executive session to confer with their attorneys about a mediation agreement that would hopefully end the issue peacefully without further action required.
Hoping to conclude the issue by April, there is no firm date on when or if the issue will need to proceed to court.
Maintenance projects for the district continue as several campuses and buildings have received much needed work.
Of the projects completed the most impactful are the completion of the upgrades to the gas line at the Intermediate School, baseball field concession, and middle school dismissal exit.
Additionally renovations were made to the maintenance building and pothole and roofs around the district were repaired.
Moving forward, the department looks to continue its turf spraying, and plans for floor stripping on most campuses.
The district began talks about budget in this weeks meeting.
A timeline was presented starting with that very meeting and moving gradually through the year up to August where a special meeting will be called to ratify a budget and decide upon a tax rate.
The process starts in earnest in the next few weeks as admin reach out to speak with principals about the needs of their individual campuses. The LMS Drone Team was recognized at the beginning of the meeting.
Competing in January, the small four-man team brought home first place in engineering design, as well as first place overall.
