Area football two-a-days start Monday

The Levelland Lobos will be starting two-a-days this upcoming week, July 31.

This season will be Athletic Director and Head Coach Lyle Leong’s third season with the Lobos and expectations are high.

The Lobos coaching staff will be handing out equipment and getting athletes prepared for full-pad contact, April 1.

The staff and overall team feel like their record last season did not reflect how good the team was. Additionally, the program has improved this past season with a lot of returning players coming back with experience. Not only is the team excited but the coaches are as well with a couple of new coaches and players that are ready to prove themselves.

“We’re super excited and a lot of positive things are happening in the program, said Assistant Coach Gary Thorne. “Some big things are in the mix but we’re just ready to get out there, work and hopefully get some players on board with what we’re trying to instill in them.”

The Lobos have some younger athletes that have continued to show up to all the summer workouts and some returning players that are trying to shape the Levelland culture back to how it was before them.

Some key players that Coach Thorne had mentioned that were returning as seniors include Rusty Johnson who was an all-around athlete. Joe Pena who is one of the bigger guys up front will be looked at to make an impact for the Lobos.

Coach Thorne feels that the Lobo secondary is one of the best in the district and explained that they’re improving everyday.

“They’ve made strides in what they’re trying to achieve and they continue to work at it every day,” said Coach Thorne.

Overall, two-a-days has lit a fire for everyone in Levelland as they know what kind of damage they can do this year. The coaching staff has enjoyed seeing the athletes be a part of summer workout and they feel that everyone has bought into the culture.
