Commissioners hold meeting, budget workshop

The Hockley County Commissioners’ Court met Monday to discuss various agenda items and hold a budget workshop.

After approving the last meeting’s minutes, the court approved monthly bills and claims submitted to the court through July 13. District Attorney Donnie Yandell then introduced the recently hired Assistant District Attorney and gave a short update.

The court discussed course enrollments for both AI and cybersecurity training to be done through TAC in the next 30 days. It was stated that county employees had already done a cybersecurity training but needed to redo it as the company was not DIR approved. Both training items were approved, and they stated they hope to start within the week.

In other action, the court approved a Contract and Agreement concerning ambulance service between the city of Littlefield and Hockley County. They then noted there were no changes in the sheriff and constable fees for 2027 and approved them. They also reviewed June fire runs and saw no issues.

After those items, the court approved an item tabled on June 22 regarding the Final Plat for lots and tracts in Precinct 1.

The court proceeded to the budget workshop, which started with a presentation by Misty Taylor from the tax office. Taylor requested vehicle allowance, and it was noted that the office needs to turn in mileage. She also asked for funds for continuing education to certify employees in case something happens. Commissioners stated they needed numbers before making decisions.

After the presentation, the court discussed what they no longer need to budget for and returned to the tax office requests considering vehicle allowance and saying more training is a good idea. It was mentioned that the tax office does a good job of crosstraining employees but that most of them were new.

The court briefly discussed technology at the extension office, jail repairs, rearranging the jail budget and maintenance funds for certain buildings. They also mentioned funding needs for fire trucks in Smyer and Ropes and two commissioners said they will get more information this week.

The court then got sidetracked talking about parks and meetings before discussing a budget increase for the ambulance. They also noted the law enforcement elevator has not been started.

It was concluded the court needs hard numbers and will most likely get more this week. They then scheduled budget meetings for July 20 and 27 and noted they were not behind before the meeting was adjourned.
