Geraldine Rosales wins state SWCD poster contest

Geraldine Rosales, a fourth grade student at Levelland Intermediate School, and the Hockley Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) #129, were selected as the winner of the 2022 State of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Board Poster Contest. Geraldine, daughter of Luz M. Pina of Levelland, designed the poster when she was a third grade student at Capitol Elementary in Mrs. Rebecca Luna’s class. The poster she created depicted this year’s subject “Healthy Soils: Healthy Life.”

Her poster won local in February; advanced to the area Star contest and winning in May.

Geraldine was recognized during her third grade awards assembly with a plaque and $100 award.

Ronnie Alexander, chairman of the board for the Hockley County Soil and Water Conservation District, recently had the honor of presenting Geraldine with a plaque and $500 award for winning the State of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Board Poster Contest.

“We as a district are so proud of this young lady and her state winning poster,” said Alexander. “We have never had an entry from our county win the state contest and would like to wish her the very best as her poster advances to the national competition to be held early next year.” Her poster will now advance to the National Association of Conservation Districts Poster Contest to be held in December 2022. “I’m really happy and excited about my poster winning state,” said Geraldine. “I want to save my money and some day continue to help change the world to be a better place, with no plastics or trash in our oceans and no more air pollution.”

Geraldine said she wants to grow up to be a math teacher because she really loves math.
