According to a press release from the Department of Public Safety, a three vehicle wreck occurred around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday on the westbound lanes of Highway 114.
At the time, a DPS trooper had pulled over a Dodge Challenger for a traffic stop, and both vehicles were parked on the shoulder of the highway.
A Ford F-550 traveling the wrong way on Highway 114 struck the challenger, which collided with the DPS vehicle.
The collision resulted in the death of the driver of the Challenger, and the driver of the Ford was transported to UMC for moderate injuries.
Shortly after the crash, one vehicle reportedly ignited, but was extinguished.
Levelland EMS, Levelland Fire Department, Hockley County Sheriff’s Office and Smyer Fire Department were on hand.
Reports indicate that a DPS vehicle was struck in this incident, but the trooper is expected to make a full recovery with only minor injuries.
The trooper was also transported for evaluation and released.
