Hockley County Grand Jury returns 15 indictments

A Hockley County Grand Jury in the 286th Judicial District Court returned 15 indictments, eight of those were made public.

Lance Paul Cooper, 35, was charged with assaulting a peace officer or judge. The indictment states, on or about April 27, 2023, Cooper intentionally, knowingly and recklessly caused bodily injury to Levelland Police Officer Matthew Benoit by headbutting the officer while knowing he was a police officer.

The indictment also had two enhancements. The first enhancement states that Cooper was convicted of the felony offense of Prohibited Substance in a Correctional Facility. The second enhancement states that prior to the commission of the primary offense and after the conviction in the first enhancement, Cooper committed the felony offense of possession of marijuana between 50 pounds and 2,000 pounds.

Ruben Flores Pesina Jr., 40, was charged with possession of a controlled substance between one and four grams in penalty group one-B.

On or about March 29, Pesina Jr., intentionally and knowingly possessed a controlled substance, methamphetamine between one and four grams.

Felipe Rodriguez Jr., 41, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

On or about April 12, 2022, Rodriguez Jr., intentionally and knowingly threaten Jesus Jose Granado with imminent bodily injury by swinging a brick directly towards Granado and, or by swinging his hand to strike Granado. The Grand Jury further presents that during the commission of the said offense, Rodriguez Jr., used or exhibited a deadly weapon, namely a brick.

The indictment lists one enhancement that states on or about March 6, 2013, Rodriguez Jr. was convicted of the felony offense of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Elisa Reyna Navarrette, 57, was charged with aggravated assault or threat with a deadly weapon.

The indictment states that on or about February 12, Navarrette intentionally and knowingly threatened Pablo Madrid Navarrette with imminent bodily injury by driving a motor vehicle into a motor vehicle driven by Pablo Madrid Navarrette.

The Grand Jury further presents that during the commission of the offense, Elisa Reyna Navarrette used or exhibited a deadly weapon, namely a motor vehicle, which in the manner of its use or intended use was capable of causing serious bodily injury or death.

Lara Francisco, 29, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

On or about April 25, Francisco intentionally and knowingly threatened Frank Hernandez Jr. with imminent bodily injury by threatening to shoot Hernandez with a handgun and used or exhibited a deadly weapon, namely a handgun during the commission of the assault.

Kavan Lee Cherry, 56, was charged with manufacturing or delivery of a controlled substance between four and 200 grams in penalty group one-B.

On or about November 16, 2022, Cherry knowingly possessed with intent to deliver a controlled substance, methamphetamine, between four and 200 grams. The indictment lists one enhancement that states on or about April 16, 2004, Cherry was convicted of the felony offense of burglary of a habitation.

Mary Alice Baigen, 22, was charged with burglary of a habitation. Additionally, Baigen was charged with the offense of child endangerment.

The first count within the indictment states on or about May 4, Baigen intentionally and knowingly entered a habitation without effective consent of the owner Victor Resendez and attempted to commit or committed an assault against Resendez.

The second count states, on or about May 4, Baigen intentionally, knowingly, recklessly or with criminal negligence engaged in conduct that placed a child younger than 15 years of age in imminent danger of death, bodily injury or physical or mental impairment by attempting to grab or by grabbing the child from the arms of Juliana Esparza.

The second count also states that on or about May 4, Baigen intentionally, knowingly, recklessly or with criminal negligence engaged in conduct that placed a child younger than 15 years of age in imminent danger of death, bodily injury or physical or mental impairment by attempting to grab or by grabbing the child from the arms of Victor Resendez.

The second count continues by stating on or about May 4, Baigen intentionally, knowingly, recklessly or with criminal negligence engaged in conduct that placed a child younger than 15 years of age in imminent danger of death, bodily injury or physical or mental impairment by spraying Victor Resendez with pepper spray while he was holding the child.

The second count is finished by stating on or about May 4, Baigen intentionally, knowingly, recklessly or with criminal negligence engaged in conduct that placed a child younger than 15 years of age in imminent danger of death, bodily injury or physical or mental impairment by spraying Juliana Esparza with pepper spray while she was holding the child.

Christopher Ray Trevino, 20, was charged with assault of a peace officer or judge.

The indictment states on or about January 7, Trevino intentionally, knowingly or recklessly caused bodily injury to Hockley County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyler Holley by swinging his arms at Holley causing Holley to lose his balance and fall to the ground.
