Keep Levelland Beautiful receives Apache Tree Grant

Thanks to the Apache Tree Grants, Keep Levelland Beautiful is facilitating a Tree Giveaway for interested community members in October.

According to Kelly Hancock, Special Programs Manager with the Levelland Chamber of Commerce, three Apache Tree Grants were won, granting several trees to the City of Levelland, Levelland ISD and South Plains College.

October 18th, KLB will be partnering with the City of Levelland Parks Department to donate 250 trees to the citizens of Levelland in a drive-through event at the Levelland Tree Farm at 1901 McKinley St.

The trees will be free for anyone with a 79336 Zip code (ID’s Must be shown), but there is a limit to 2 5gallon Cedar Elms per car. This event kicks off at 4:30 and will go until 6:30, or until supplies run out.

The Apache Tree Grant is a grant very familiar to this area, with Levelland being the recipient several times now. This year the grant was pursued again, yielding the most trees ever at 450, with an estimated value of $11,250. Of these trees, 50 will go to the City of Levelland Tree Farm to be nursed before being transplanted elsewhere in the community, SPC and LISD will receive 150, and plans are in the works to give away the remaining 250 to citizens that wish to have them.

Prior to this event, tree planting ceremonies will be taking place across town in honor of the Apache Tree Grants. SPC will plant one on Clubview Drive at 2:30 p.m., LISD has one being planted on ABC’s Campus at 3 p.m., and there will be a planting at the City Tree Farm at 3:30 p.m.

The Governor’s Community Achievement Award, which KLB won several years ago, came with a sizable fund for a beautification project for Levelland, and board members decided upon a new set of mosaics at the intersection of FM300 and Highway 385.

Construction is underway for the project, with staff reporting it is growing close to completion. President of the Levelland Chamber of Commerce Mary Siders, explained that once the mosaics were installed, they would be covered pending a ribbon cutting and reveal event from the Chamber.

The Fall Sweep is one of the Community Clean Up days put on by the chamber every year to help identify areas throughout town that need assistance in cleaning up trash or litter. Volunteers will meet outside the Best Western Inn & Suites at 8:30 a.m., where visibility vests and other tools will be dispersed. Volunteers will then be split up into teams to tackle litter until noon.

The Fall Sweep is right around the corner on October 7th, and the Chamber has been busy contacting interested parties to locate more volunteers. Levelland Noon Rotary and Lions’ Clubs, Girl Scout Troops, National Honor Society (NHS), and Young Emerging Leaders of Levelland (YELL), as well as local 4-H chapters have all been contacted to assist.

Reviewing the Community Wide Garage Sale event that happened earlier in the Summer, the Chamber had much to reflect on. Compared to last year, which only saw 21 houses involved, this year saw a staggering 58 register.

The biggest issue that citizens ran into was reportedly a lack of information about where to find the list of partnered garage sales. The “Trash to Treasures” contest, which was a competition for citizens to find an odd item at one of these garage sales, then refurbish it to encourage recycling, unfortunately saw no entries this year, marking the second year similar trouble for the contest.
