Letter to the editor

On Oct 6, 1964, President Linden B. Johnson signed Presidential Proclamation 3622 declaring Oct 15, 1964 as White Cane Safety Day in the United States.

Each year thereafter individuals and organizations have acknowledged and celebrated White Cane Day.

These events are especially important events in Texas. In most years the largest gathering and celebration occurs in Austin on the campus of the Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired.

The white cane and dog guides have made independent living much more productive and successful for Texans who are blind or visually impaired. The white cane and dog guide have made safe mobility an ordinary event for most Texans who are blind or visually impaired.

As you drive on our streets and through parking lots, please be constantly aware of all pedestrians, especially those using white canes or dog guides. In these days of quieter cars it is even more important for you to be aware of those using white canes or dog guides because they may not hear your quiet car as well as before when vehicles made more noise upon approach.

The various chapters and affiliates of the American Council of the Blind of Texas, an affiliate of the American Council of the Blind and a 501c3 nonprofit organization, will hold and participate in White Cane Day events across Texas. Please remember that the White Cane Day in 2023 will be on Oct 15, 2023, even if celebrations take place on other days.
