Levelland ISD issued a press release regarding the future of Levelland Intermediate School for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year.
The release states that several factors played a role in the decision to close the building for the next school year.
“In an effort to make the best decision for our students, staff, and community needs, a number factors were considered in making the decision,” stated the LISD press release.
Stating that student needs are and will always be the priority at Levelland ISD.
The release mentions enrollment has continued to decline over the past several years with the district enrollment at 3,067 students in 2016.
For the current school year, the release has school enrollment at 2,658 students. Projecting enrollment for the upcoming school years based on current demographics and birth rates, the data collected suggests enrollment is expected to continue to decline slightly for several years.
In regard to the building, the structure was built in 1938 .
The release mentions the beauty of the building, however, the costs of repairs and renovations is considerable.
The repairs mention in the release include but are not limited to plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, roofing, ADA compliance and additional items.
The projected cost for repairs exceed $2.1 million according to the release.
With all of those factors considered, it was determined it has become unrealistic to continue to operate the facility.
At the beginning of the 20232024 school year, the campus layout will be as follows: Levelland ABC will include Pre-K through first grade; South Elementary and Capitol Elementary will consist of second grade through fourth grade; Levelland Middle School will include fifth grade through eighth grade; Levelland High School will remain unchanged with only ninth grade through 12th grade.
The release states principals will begin to meet with staff to determine staffing assignments for the next year.
“Our goal is to ensure all current Levelland Intermediate School staff will have a position with Levelland ISD next year,” stated in the press release. “The campuses will host parents and students for informational meetings in the coming months.”
