I remember traveling with my family while growing up. We usually did not go far, but often we would need lodging for the night. At that time ‘reservations’ were not a thing. The driver drove until tired, then looked for a roadside motel. Sometimes we would spot one, but as we got a closer look, one of my parents would get a serious look on their face, and say, “Let’s go to the next one.”
As we continued, the sun sank lower, and the voices were more strained. It had been a long day. We had taken in sights, walked and ran in roadside parks, sometimes wading in cool streams. Our energy was definitely waning. So when we approached the next brightly lit resting option I would sense a sigh of relief. But alas, just as we approached the driveway, the sign would start flashing, “FULL”. That happened more than once.
You may not relate much to my reminiscing, but I know most of you can relate to being tired and needing rest. As you encounter day after day of nurturing children, providing meals, maintaining a somewhat orderly home between loads of laundry, let me assure you that there is a place of rest. And it never flashes, “FULL”.
I encourage you to take the time to rest in God’s Word, even if it is only for a few minutes. God wants to refresh you. No matter what you face, we can say with King Solomon, “But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster.” (1Kings 5:4 NIV) A few years earlier his father, King David, had written, “My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock…He is my fortress…”. (Psalm 62:1,2 NIV) I could go on and on. I challenge you to meditate on Psalm 63.
Years later, Jesus declared that He is gentle and humble, and encouraged His followers, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 NIV).
Did you see that word ‘all’? That includes you and me and every human being on the face of the earth. That thought gives me chills. Don’t be afraid to trust Him. He will give you rest.
