South Plains College will host the 37th year of Camp Bluegrass Sunday through Friday (July 1621). The camp includes some of the best instructors and performers in the bluegrass music scene. The theme for the 2023 camp is West Coast Bluegrass.
Throughout the week, there will be nightly faculty performances and daily jam sessions in the Tom T. Hall Studio that are open to the public. There is no admission charge.
This six-day residential camp attracts bluegrass musicians from across the nation. The camp is designed to improve the individual skills of banjo, guitar and mandolin players. Also, classes are provided for fiddle, dobro, bass, vocals and songwriting. Participants can attend master classes designed for all the instruments. They are given the opportunity to study styles of solo and ensemble singing, the history of bluegrass music and music theory for pickers.
The late Joe Carr is credited with creating Camp Bluegrass with fellow instructor and musician Alan Munde in 1986. Carr taught at SPC for 33 years.
Instructors will be Scott Anderson, Bill Evans, Gerald Jones, Beth Mead and Alan Munde, banjo; Nate Lee, fiddle; Dan Boner, Tim May, Elliott Rogers and Dave Polson, guitar; Jimmy Heffernan, dobro; Scott Napier and Steve Smith, mandolin; Anne Luna, bass; Chris Sanders, songwriting; and Dede Wyland, vocals.
