SPC holds Judy Bryant Fitness Court ceremony

In partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, South Plains College and National Fitness Campaign a ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday through the Levelland Chamber of Commerce for the Judy Bryant Outdoor Fitness Court.

The outdoor fitness court and digital wellness programming is located at SPC’s Levelland campus at 1401 S. College Ave. Located at the corner of J.V. Morton Drive and E.M. Barnes Drive, the ceremony was held at 10:30 a.m. SPC becomes just the second community college within the state to join the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas wellness campaign following a successful launch at Odessa College earlier this year.

This Fitness Court was developed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, SPC and National Fitness Campaign to expand free access to high quality workouts and create equitable access to exercise for communities around the state. The Fitness Court is the world’s best outdoor gym that lets people use their own body weight to get a complete workout using seven exercise stations.

Created with people aged 14 and over and with all abilities in mind, the workouts are adaptable for all fitness levels, allowing participants to move at their own pace. Users are encouraged to download the free Fitness Court App which acts as a coach in your pocket and enhances the outdoor gym into a digitally supported wellness experience.

“On average, one in two adults don’t have enough aerobic physical activity in their day-today lives, which can lead to chronic, yet preventable, conditions,” said Sheena Payne, director of community affairs at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. “Helping fund these Fitness Courts is just one more way we can work toward all Texans having access to optimal health outcomes right in their own community.”

This addition to the SPC Levelland campus is one of up to 20 outdoor Fitness Courts in a series of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas Fitness Courts that will be constructed in easily accessible public spaces this year. The Judy Bryant Outdoor Fitness Court is the first of its kind in Hockley County.

“We are very excited to have this facility on our campus,” said Dee Dee Ninemire, director of the SPC Physical Fitness Center. “We also thank Butch’s Rat Hole and the Bryant family for their generous donation to complete the project. I am proud to be a part of such a great mission and to honor an amazing lady who dedicated her career to promoting the importance of exercise.”

“National Fitness Campaign is proud to welcome South Plains College to the campaign as a leader in Texas, championing health and wellness for not just their campus community, but the greater Levelland community,” said Mitch Menaged, founder of National Fitness Campaign. “We are proud to continue our mission of getting people moving outdoors and helping communities combat the fiscal and humanitarian costs of sedentary lifestyles.”

Students, faculty, staff and community members were invited to attend the launch event and to try the Fitness Court. For more information on Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas’ support of NFC, please visit nationalfitnesscampaign.com/ texas.
