Eighteen hundred thousand calories an hour

It was a normal Saturday night. Speedster was running quickly, though nowhere near her top speed.

Speedster always paid for everything. That night she had eaten twenty bags of chips, a dozen candy bars, and about a gallon of soda. Then disaster struck.

The Vindicator didn't have super powers, but he did have a strategic mind. He set up various disaster scenes around the city, forcing Speedster to deal with each one. Eventually, in his mind, she'd run out of the calories she'd eaten and be easy prey for him.

He was right, up to a point. He had set up several explosions. They were timed so she'd have no time to eat.

Speedster had dealt with the sixth explosion, rescuing hundreds of people. She could feel her stomach growling, but the next explosion had taken out a restaurant full on a Saturday.

As she evacuated the people, she quickly ate the leftover food. Unaware that Vindictator had planned ahead, his bomb having also sprayed microbes on the food to make her sick. Her super quick metabolism caused the microbes to infect her quicker than they would a normal human. After she took the last diner out, she doubled over and vomited. A police officer asked, “Are you feeling okay, Speedster?”

She straightened up and said, 'Yes, I think so. Just hope that's the last bomb. I'm getting hangry. The perp wouldn't like me when I'm hangry.”

The officer got a call on his radio about a burning apartment building on the other side of town. Informing Speedster, he added, “You can eat my lunch. Here.” She thanked him and ate it in a millisecond.

When she arrived, she evacuated the place and helped put out the fire. A paramedic walked up to her with a hypodermic. “I use this on diabetics with sugar crashes,” he said as she injected the contents into her system. Speedster thanked the man and was about to walk away when another police officer rushed up to her.

“Speedster, I was given this for you.”

Speedster thanked her and asked, 'Did you see which way he went?”

The officer looked like she was going to cry. “No, he said that if I didn't stay facing the wall for the two minutes he needed to escape, he'd shoot me…” Speedster put a comforting hand on the woman's shoulder. 'It's fine. You don't have superpowers. The city needs good police officers.”

She then opened the letter. It said ‘Speedster, I will be waiting for you at the train station next to the hospital. Come alone or I'll blow them both up. You have to be here by 11:15 PM. Signed, Vindicator.’

Speedster looked at her watch and saw she had five minutes to get there. She could run just fast enough to get there in time, though she knew she’d be weak from hunger, but she couldn't let him blow up the hospital and train station.

Speedster had a quick idea. She asked the paramedic, 'How many more shots have you got?”

After she used the last couple of shots and he gave her a vial of glucose tablets, she ran off to confront the Vindicator.

He was waiting for her in a panel van loaded with radio gear. “How are you doing, dear? Hungry?” he taunted.

She didn't waste the energy to answer him. She pushed past and tore all the wires out of the control board.

“Silly girl, that was keeping the last two bombs from going off.”

She bluffed and said, 'Let's see if I have enough energy to evacuate them and keep you safe.”

Speedster deposited him on the roof of the hospital as she raced away to help the patients. She hoped he wouldn't run off before the bombs took out both places.

Ten seconds later, the hospital and train station were emptied of people and she raced back to capture Vindicator. As she got to the roof, she was gasping and enraged to see Vindicator laugh and pull out a gun.

“You really didn't think I failed to have a backup plan?”

'I had a backup plan too. Did you really think it would take me that much time to clear out the people? I stopped at the cafeteria for a little bit of food. I've got just enough speed left to take you out again, and you better hope I don't take my being hangry out on you.”
