Iris is a lesser known goddess from Greek mythology. Her claim to fame came from having the supposed ability to generate rainbows, which enabled her to travel quickly between realms. Her primary role was to carry messages of hope for better things to come, to other kingdoms.
I am thankful that we have a greater hope than any mythological character could ever convey. From the beginning of time, my Creator God had a plan to rescue mankind and give him hope and peace. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV). Jesus suffered, died, and rose again, to enable us to stand before God with our sins forgiven. Because of that, we can approach His throne of grace with confidence! (Hebrews 4:16 NIV). The Psalmist, David, proclaimed, “No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame…” (Psalm 25:3 NIV). That makes me want to shout.
The writer of Hebrews also reassures us that our hope in Christ is an “anchor for the soul, firm and secure”. (Hebrews 6:19 NIV). Iris has been pretty much forgotten. But Jesus, our ultimate hope, and only interceder, still prevails—not just for this life, but for eternity. The Apostle Paul argued, “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.” (1 Corinthians 15:19 NIV) If you are searching for hope, don’t count on a visit from Iris. Call upon Jesus. Read God’s Word. “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4 NIV) “Father, thank You for the hope You give. Please help me to read and understand Your Word, then apply it to my life. Amen.”
I am a retired teacher, striving to make Jesus known.
