Loboettes sweep Abernathy

This past Tuesday, the Levelland Loboettes volleyball squad swept Abernathy at home winning the match, 3-0.

After completely controlling the first two sets, the Loboettes found themselves down 1-6 at one point in the third set before showing resilience and completing the comeback to finish them off.

Following the sweep, Head Coach Jai-deanne Madrid talked about one of her athletes who was a big reason for their success.

“Mia Sepulbeda definitely stole the show. I nominated her for the Hub City Preps player of the week,” Madrid said. “She’s our outside hitter, she started out playing front row only, but I realized her strong energy and that she needs to be on the court the whole time. She had five kills, 22 attacks, one ace and only two errors, which is phenomenal.”

What a monster night for Sepulbeda, making her mark on the match and helping lead the Loboettes to victory.

The win puts them at 4-5 overall on the season, which Coach Madrid acknowledged wasn’t bad given she’s a new coach with a completely new team, that only had three returners from last season and has three freshmen on varsity.

For Levelland volleyball, it’s been a lot of exploring and adapting early on in the season.

“It’s the beginning of the season and we have tried a few different substitutions in different spots. We started the season with the libero and now we have a solid defensive system that we put together,” Madrid said. “We’ve found a good lineup and good substitutions, and I think they’re just now starting to get comfortable and build more chemistry as a team and it’s tough because they’re young.”

Considering all of this that’s actively happening during the season, 4-5 isn’t a half bad start at all.

The Loboettes are headed in the right direction, and according to Coach Madrid they’ll be in an even better spot once they get in “volleyball shape.”

She noted the more games they play, the more they’ll get in proper competition shape.

They’ll get that chance to further progress in all aspects as team this weekend as they compete at the Graham tournament.

Following the tournament the Loboettes return home on Tuesday for a double header match against Plains and Loop at 4:15pm and 7:00pm.
