This past Saturday, Sundown, Smyer, Ropes, Whiteface and Morton all faced off against each other at the 2A District Five Cross Country meet at Yoakum Park in Denver City, Texas.
Sundown stole the show on the day as their varsity girl’s team captured the district title and their varsity boy’s team were district runners-up.
The Roughettes won the two-mile run team title with a score of 20 points and an average split of 13:14 between their top five runners.
All seven of the varsity Roughettes placed within the top 15 of the two-mile run with the best of them all being junior Kaytlin Clausen, who ran 12:38.84 to secure the individual district title.
Coming in with great finishes behind her was freshman Karter Hord in 13:13.47 for third, sophomore Avy McGlasson in 13:19.20 for fourth, junior Addilyn Hord in 13:21.18 for fifth, Sarah Posadas in 13:39.94 for seventh, sophomore Karmindy Townsend in 14:10.27 for 10th and sophomore Maddy Medrano in 14:28.21 for 14th.
The varsity Roughneck boys didn’t place quite as high individually, but their consistency across the board is what resulted in the runnerup team finish in the 5k run.
All seven of their boys finished within the top 20 including senior Jaydith Shelton in 17:54.40 for eighth, senior Rolando Rivera in 17:57.74 for ninth, junior Lincoln Keesler in 18:06.08 for 10th, senior Daniel Mauldin in 18:59 for 16th, junior Corey Goodman in 19:46.91 for 19th and junior Ryder Stanley in 19:49.98 for 20th.
The Smyer Bobcats boys also showed up big at the meet and although they didn’t have enough runners to qualify for a team title, senior Ismael Pizano took home the individual boys district title.
Pizano ran a 15:45.14 to win it, which was nearly 36 seconds faster than the runner-up.
His Bobcat teammate, senior Austin Martinez, joined him in the top five, running 17:10.76 to finish fifth.
And rounding out the standout performances from Hockley County boys was sophomore Chase Schumm, who ran a 16:34.72 to place third for the Ropes Eagles.
Back on the girl’s side, the Whiteface Lady Antelopes finished runner-up as a team with 51 points as all five of their runners placed in the top 17 with an average split of 14:03.
Junior Lainey Sanders was their highest finisher, running 13:28.60 for sixth place, followed by senior Anais Soliz in 13:53.67 for eighth, sophomore Kambry Sanders in 14:01.39 for ninth, freshman Rhaelyn Bracey in 14:12.30 for 12th and senior Emily Blankenship in 14:39.97 for 17th.
The Morton Maidens were also noteworthily able to secure a fourth-place team finish.
All and all, it was an awesome job by all our Hockley County runners representing well at the district cross country meet.
