A loaf full of dreams and a kitchen full of warmth

Imagine the smell of fresh dough and the taste of spicy yet sweet jam melting on the tongue. At Pappy and Nana’s Five and Dime that’s exactly what will be found. Mary Engledow and her husband Danny Engledow have been perfecting their sourdough and canned goods for years, using clean and gut health ingredients.

All of her ingrediants are from either Idalou and locally grown so you know you will be getting nothing but the best products out of Engledow’s baked goods.

Engledow started taking sourdough classes through South Plains Patriots about three years ago and being the youngest one in attendance an idea sparked and a business was born.

“My mother was 103 years old and I still use [sourdough] today. After the classes were over I was the only one who continued it,” said Engledow.

She started sharing her bread with family and then friends, who wanted more. During this time she was on Levelland City Council and she began spreading her love for bread making more and more as a past time.

“After I was finished with City Council, I wasn’t as busy so I was fast and furious with it and just took off,” said Engledow.

She not only makes sourdough but she has been a natural canner for as long as she can remember. She makes spicy jam which adds a different flare than regular jams. She originally started canning for just her family, like salsa, greened beans and potatoes.

“Once I started making weird jams like watermelon jam, I started getting asked for strawberry jalapeno,” said Engledow. “Well that sparked my curiosity. From there it took it and people to this day love it.”

After years of perfecting her recipes she started doing shows at Adephos’ Cellars every Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. Along with other farmer markets and craft shows, like the Friday Art Trail in Lubbock where she can show off her homemade creations.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to buy, and it allows different groups of people to buy your products,” said Engledow.

Englewood couldn’t have started this dream without her husband Danny. Togther her and her husband have five grown children, 13 grandchildren and one great grandson. They have been married 30 years and are blessed to have found each other.

“My husband is 60 years old and he’s coming ot the end of his work time. Hopefully Pappy and Nana’s Five and Dime is our golden years,” said Engledow.

Engledow is so grateful for the opportunity to share her love of baking with her community and can’t say thank you enough for all the support throughout the years. She also loves giving back to her first responders and anyone she can with her goods as a show of gratitude.

“God has been so good to us and what a blessing Pappy and Nana’s has been,” said Englewood. “I keep pushing and striving trying to get into new places and set my stuff in different places. I couldn’t have done it without my husband or my community.”
