The Sundown Roughnecks and Roughettes basketball teams faced off against the Lubbock Titans at home this past Friday night, with both teams securing blowout victories.
The Sundown boys won 62-30 to improve to a 6-4 record, while the girls won 60-40 to improve to 10-7 overall.
Scorers for the Roughnecks included Isaiah Igo with 16 points, Kye Powell with 14 points, Josh Hogan and Athan Peralez both with eight points, Coen Nevarez with seven points, Nathan McAdams with six points and Brock Bufe with three points.
And as good as the Roughnecks offense was in the game, what was even better was the immense effort that they played with on the night.
If there was a loose ball, rebound or extra play to be made, they made it, which was something Roughnecks Head Coach Kyle Igo spoke on.
“That’s what we call Roughneck points. We chart Roughneck points, which are hustle plays, taking charges, deflections and steals," Coach Igo said. “Our guys really buy into that. I thought we were pretty active, it was good on the defensive side."
Coach Igo was also pleased with his team getting to exercise their zone offense schemes and how they moved the ball around in the game, while noting they can still improve on being more connected defensively, protecting the paint and rebounding.
In the Roughettes game, statistical standouts included Kathryn Flores with 18 points behind four threepointers made, adding three steals, two rebounds and an assist.
Camry Jourden recorded 14 points, eight steals, four rebounds and three assists, and Kelby Powell recorded 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks.
Kaytlin Clausen had eight points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists, and Kyndal Taggart had six points, 14 rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block.
The Roughettes were in a great offensive flow all night, and defensively they made the Titans work for every point, a stellar performance that Roughettes Head Coach Jared Neighbors spoke on.
“I really like where the team is at right now heading into district. We have to improve on protecting the ball and making the easy shots, but the intensity and competitive spirit is always there with this team," Coach Neighbors said. “We are also so balanced on offense, anybody on any given day can go off and that’s hard to guard, they are unselfish and try to find the open shooters.
It’s going to be a fun district race."
Following their wins, both Sundown teams have matchups early in the week before returning to action on Friday.
The Roughnecks go on the road to play Sudan at 6:15 p.m. and the Roughettes host district foe Ropes at 2:15 p.m.
