Lobos, Loboettes both fall before Christmas break

The Levelland basketball teams wrapped up their pre-Christmas break play, with the Lobos falling 83-37 to Lubbock Christian at home this past Thursday and the Loboettes falling 70-39 to Liberty on the road this past Friday.

The Lobos loss drops them to 13-3 overall and ends their 13-game win streak, while the Loboettes loss drops them to 14-5 overall and ends their three-game win streak.

On the Lobos side of things, it was the perfect storm against them, as Lubbock Christian shot 53% from the field and 35% from three-point range, while the Lobos shot 23% from the field and 18% from three- point range.

They were also outrebounded 54-18 and bested 70% to 57% at the free throw line, in what was just an off night for the Lobos against a very skilled team.

Scorers against Lubbock Christian included Noah Martin with eight points, Bryson Golightly and Ethan Salazar both with six points, Bentley Sepulbeda and Zavien Longoria both with four points, Kane Rice with three points, and Anthony Gonzales, Kaden Brogden and Zeke Martinez all with two points.

The Lobos will enjoy a Christmas break before returning in the Caprock Classic Tournament on Monday versus Lubbock Monterey at 12 p.m. in the Lubbock Monterey High School gym, where they’ll look to erase the taste of the loss.

Their bracket pool includes Estacado, Hereford, Lubbock High, Lubbock Christian, Plainview, West Plains, Shallowater, Permian, Lubbock Monterey, Midland Christian, Abilene, Coronado, Fort Worth Dunbar, Trinity, Fort Worth Southwest, Frenship Memorial and El Paso Eastwood.

Following tournament play, the Lobos will kick off district play at home on Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. against Snyder.

On the Loboettes side of things, they started strong against Liberty, trailing by only two points after the first quarter, but that was the closest they’d come in the 31-point loss.

Liberty bested the Loboettes 37% to 24% on field goal shooting and 92% to 33% on field throw shoot ing, which would ultimately be the difference.

The Loboettes shot two more free throws than Liberty, yet Liberty still came away with 14 more made free throws. The Loboettes did best Liberty 33% to 26% from three-point range though.

Scorers against Liberty included Brooklyn Escobar and London Branch both with nine points, Presley Smith with eight points, Brook’lyn Cornish with seven points, Sydnii Joyce with four points and Destynii Jones with two points.

After the Christmas break, the Loboettes will return in the Littlefield Wildcat Clas sic Tournament on Monday at 8:00 a.m. versus the Sundown Roughettes.

Their bracket pool includes Friona, Farwell, Sundown, Olton, Denver City, Elida, Dimmitt, Portales, Dumas, Pecos and Little- field.

Following tournament play, the Loboettes will square off with district foe Snyder at home on Jan. 2 at 6:15 p.m.
