The Morton Maidens hosted the Sundown Roughettes for a district basketball game this past Tuesday night, with the Roughettes coming out on top, 81-37.
The win improves the Roughettes to 17-10 overall and 4-1 in district play, while the loss drops the Maidens to 10-14 overall and 2-4 in district play.
Following the win, Roughettes Head Basketball Coach Jared Neighbors praised the focus and intensity that his girls played with, along with their unselfish play and great shot selection.
That unselfish play showed up big in the scorebook as five Roughettes scored in double figures, and every girl on the active roster scored points.
Standouts for the Roughettes included Camry Jourden with 17 points, six steals, five assists and two rebounds, Kathryn Flores with 13 points, five assists, five rebounds and a steal, and Kelbie Powell with 12 points, 16 rebounds, five steals and four blocks.
Other scorers for the Roughettes included Avy McGlasson and Kyndal Taggart both with 10 points, Kassady Rodgers with nine points, and Kaytlin Clausen and Lilly Reaves both with five points.
As a team, the Roughettes shot 43% from the field, 25% from three-point range and 52% from the free throw line.
On the Maidens side of things, it was a tough loss, but a valuable learning experience against a good team.
“The girls fought really hard for the entirety of the game,” Maidens Interim Head Coach Martin Adams said. “Unfortunately, shots didn’t fall early enough for us. We have been focused on playing transition basketball. Playing quick teams like Sundown helps us get quality game experience in that aspect. Every game is a learning experience, and we continually get better as the season progresses.”
The Maidens only scored one point in the first quarter, which hampered them from ever being fully able to make a comeback, but several individuals still had solid performances.
Scorers for the Maidens included Blaize Garza with 16 points behind four threepointers made, Haylee Toscano and Khloe Aguirre both with six points, Addy Sabala with three points, and J’Lynn Marquez, Ada Torres and Evolet Vigil all with two points.
Following the game, the Roughettes sit third in the 2A District 5 standings, and the Maidens sit fifth in the 2A District 5 standings.
The Roughettes will be back in action over the weekend for a district game against Whiteface, while the Maidens have a bye and then return on Tuesday at home versus Whiteface at 6:45 p.m.
