This past weekend, the South Plains College track team opened their Indoor Track season at the Corky Classic at Texas Tech University, posting several noteworthy performances.
Yassine Bounasri won the men’s 800-meter race, running a 1:49.58 to place first out of 40 competitors, and he was followed by his teammate Tamer Sakur in 10th with a 1:52.18.
The same duo excelled in the men’s 1,000 race with Sakar placing fourth out of 34 competitors with a 2:24.62, and Bounasri in seventh with a 2:26.14.
Dennis Cheruiyot had an excellent meet as well, placing 3rd out of 28 competitors in the men’s mile race with a 4:11.27 and fourth in the men’s 3,000-meter race with an 8:28.85.
The South Plains men team also showed up big in the men’s 600-yard race, led by Carlton Siwela who placed second out of 38 competitors with a 1:08.38, followed by Joshem Sylves- ter in fifth with a 1:09.64, Elijah Joseph in 13th with a 1:12.13 and Zion Miller in 15th with a 1:12.31.
In the women’s 600-yard race, Nour Rahou showed up big time for the Lady Texans, running a 1:23.41 to place ninth out of 32 competitors.
In the men’s pole vault, Jules Courel vaulted 5.33 meters (17.49 feet) to place third, while in the men’s long jump, Adem Boualbani had a jump of 7.58 meters (24.87 feet) to place sixth out of 31 competitors.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the Texans “B” team of Ismael Risser, Jacorey Harrell, Kyle Lawrence and Caleb Kelly, ran a 3:13.88 to place 15th out of 33 teams. While the Lady Texans “A” team of Mathilde Maison, Oluwatumininu Sanyaolu, Morgane Lenoir and Nour Rahou, ran a 3:51.82 to place 18th out of 34 teams.
In the men’s 60-meter dash, Harrell ran a 6.85 to place 23rd out of 79 competitors, Lawrence ran a 6.88 to place 31st and Aiden Kelly ran a 6.90 to place 37th.
In the 60-meter women’s and men’s hurdles, Sanyaolu and Jamison Lewis both advanced from the prelims to the semifinals.
Sanyaolu ran an 8.73 in the prelims to qualify, and then an 8.82 to place 22nd in the semis. Lewis ran an 8.28 to qualify and then an 8.27 to place 21st in the semis.
After a successful first indoor meet, the SPC track team will return right back to Texas Tech for yet another meet.
