The Sundown Roughettes faced off against the Gruver Lady Hounds in the Area Round of the 2A Division 2 softball playoffs this past Wednesday night at Highland Park in Amarillo, resulting in the Roughettes sweeping them in the bestof- three series to win the Area Championship.
In game one, Sundown beat Gruver 21-0 across five innings. The Roughettes scored seven runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, four runs in the third inning, three runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the fifth inning to secure the win.
In the team statistics, Sundown bested Gruver 21-2 in hits, 5-1 in walks and 1-2 in errors committed.
The Roughettes standouts at the plate in game one included Destiny Garza going 3/5 with four runs-batted-in, three runs scored, two doubles and a home run, Breigh Gregory going 3/4 with four runs scored, three RBIs and a walk, Araceli Ibarra going 3/4 with three RBIs, two doubles, a run scored and a walk, Brynly Gregory going 3/5 with four runs scored and two RBIs, Emry Jourden going ¾ with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk, and Nayleen Morin going 2/5 with two RBIs, a run scored and a home run.
Garza would handle all the mound duties in game one, surrendering zero earned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out five batters.
In game two, Sundown bested Gruver 15-0 in four innings. The Roughettes scored three runs in the first inning, five runs in the sec ond inning, six runs in the third inning and one runs in the fourth inning.
In the team statistics, the Roughettes bested the Lady Hounds 9-2 in hits, 5-0 in walks and 0-5 in errors committed.
Sundown’s standouts at the plate in game two included Garza going 2/2 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk, Morin with three RBIs, Breigh Gregory going 2/2 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk, Brynly Gregory going 2/3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Emry Jourden going 2/2 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk.
Breigh Gregory pitched all of game two, surrendering zero earned runs on two hits and no walks while striking out five batters.
The pair of wins improves the Roughettes to 25-3 overall, secures them the Area Championship and advances them to the next round of the postseason.
They’ll face the Haskell Maidens in the Regional Semifinals this weekend in Ira. Game one is on Friday at 5:30 p.m.; game two is on Saturday at 12 p.m. and if necessary, game three will follow game two.
