Hockley County Walk Across Texas kicks off

The kick-off event for the Hockley County AgriLife Walk Across Texas event was set to be held on June 15 at the courthouse gazebo with snacks, prizes and the Walk the First Mile Around the Square.

Howdy Health, by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, is providing a simple and proven way to establish a habit of regular physical activity. Since 1996, thousands of people have competed in one of the walking programs.

Teams are formed by joining individually or forming a league at an office, church, school, senior center or community group. Up to eight team members are encouraged to work together towards the goal of virtually walking across Texas. Each team member’s favorite physical activities are logged as ‘miles walked’ in the online challenge tracker and contribute toward the team’s mileage total.

Year-round participation is encouraged using locally sponsored program activities, as well as leadership provided by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension employees.

The individual mileage goal is a personal target each person can set for the miles aimed to be achieved during the program. It's a way to challenge and motivate individuals to stay active. The mileage goal can be customized to suit individual fitness level and aspirations, making it a valuable tool to track progress and stay accountable throughout the program.

Distance Mileage and Activity Mileage that is contributed to Team Mileage will each be limited to 10 miles per day for a maximum total. The mileage goal is set according to the team, but individuals can also access their Overall Total Miles in the View / Edit Miles section for tracking purposes.

There are several programs to choose from. The 10&10,000 Change Challenge is a simple program for individuals that provides a kickstart toward a healthy lifestyle. Ramp up the change levels gradually in four stages spanning 100 days.
