South Plains Community Action Association (SPCAA) is holding a ribboncutting ceremony on July 31 for the new Cochran County Food Box. The ceremony will start at 11:30 a.m. at the Food Box site on 200 West Taylor Avenue in Morton, Texas.
The food box will be open thereafter on the last Friday of every month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with individuals seeking food assistance required to be Cochran County residents and provide a government-issued photo ID and utility bill.
For those interested in donating, the Cochran County Food Box is accepting food and money donations. Food donations should ideally be shelf-stable items like dry and canned goods and made directly to the food box in Morton starting Friday.
The ribbon-cutting and food box distributions were made possible by SPCAA’s partnership with various local leaders of Cochran County, including Judge Pat Henry, The Cochran Foundation and others.
In the last three years, SPCAA has opened or revived several other food boxes, including two in Terry and Hockley counties, and is working to expand its food assistance initiative across the South Plains.
“Hunger is a battle many of our communities are facing,” said SPCAA Executive Director Bill Powell. “We want to make sure we’re doing our part by partnering with local community leaders, providing resources when needed, and doing anything in our ability to combat hunger.”
For those unable to make in-person donations, SPCAA has a Donate Now link on its website at www.spcaa. org.
