South Plains College scholarship endowments honor SPC Foundation directors

With the support of generous donations, the South Plains College Foundation has established three scholarship endowments that will not only help students achieve a bright future but also recognize the people at SPC who turn these students’ dreams into realities.

The SPC Foundation has received $10,000 for each of the following scholarship endowments honoring current and former members of the Foundation Board of Directors: the Joe Dee Brooks Memorial Technical Education Scholarship Endowment, the Donette Marble Financial Planning Scholarship Endowment and the Mark and Holly Roberts Education Scholarship Endowment. The positive impact of these directors will live on as financial support that will continue to change students’ lives.

The Joe Dee Brooks Memorial Technical Education Scholarship Endowment recognizes the late Foundation director and his service to the SPC community. The scholarship will be granted to a full- or part-time SPC student enrolled in a Technical Education Division program who maintains at least a 2.5 GPA. First preference will be given to a graduate from an accredited high school in Hockley County. This scholarship was established through gifts made in the memory of Brooks, who was an SPC alumnus and the 2023 Pacesetter Award recipient.

The Donette Marble Financial Planning Scholarship Endowment shows the Foundation director’s passion for the field. A first-generation college student, Marble graduated from SPC in 1978 after playing on the Lady Texans basketball team and went on to play for Texas Tech University. She was later named SPC’s 2022 Pacesetter. A recipient of this scholarship must be a full-time SPC student who can maintain a 3.0 GPA and aims to major in financial planning or enter the field after completing their education. Preference will be given to a member of an underrepresented population in the financial planning field.

The Mark and Holly Roberts Education Scholarship Endowment honors the vice president of the Foundation Board of Directors, Mark Roberts, and SPC alumna, Holly (Hunt) Roberts. Created by longtime SPC faculty member Helen Starr Roberts, the scholarship will be granted to a full-time SPC student who is enrolled in the Associate of Arts in Teaching degree program, will become an education major or plans to be an education professional. The recipient must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
