Improvements from last week, the Smyer Bobcats remain in the loss column, falling to the Ralls Jackrabbits, 26-8.
“I think we saw a lot of progress going through week one,” Smyer’s head coach Scott Funke said. “We learned how we could switch up our scheme a little bit without throwing away everything we taught them.”
During the Bobcats’ week one matchup, they allowed 62 points, creating zero sacks to offer little resistance for the offense.
In week two, the defense generated more pressure, racking up four sacks and six quarterback pressures.
Senior Alex Mattox made an appearance in the backfield twice, totaling two sacks versus the ‘Rabbits.
The strides made on defense can be what turns this season around, said Smyer’s head coach Scott Funke.
“We pressured Ralls a lot going into the game. Play a little bit of man coverage,” Funke said on allowing fewer points in week two than week one.
The ‘Cats will now look for improvement on the offensive side of the ball, as turning the ball over has been the reason for scoring only one touchdown in two games.
“We got to protect the ball better,” Funke said. “Understanding situations and when to cover the ball with two hands, and we fix that, we score four more times, three more times and it’s a different game.”
Heading into their next opponents, the Floydada Whirlwinds will come to play Smyer at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11.
Coach Funke compares Floydada to their week one opponent, Lockney, and the lessons they learned in that game will be applied to win in week three versus Whirlwinds. “Take some lessons from last week and the week before,” Funke said. “I’m trying to make sure we protect the ball; otherwise, it’s going to flip pretty quick.”
