County commissioners hold regular meeting

The Hockley County Commissioners Court met on Monday to approve a roofing project, authorized applications for law enforcement and ambulance grants, and approved an arrangement for additional county legal assistance.

Commissioners authorized County Judge Sharla Baldridge to apply for additional funding through the HB 3000 Rural Ambulance Grant, which opens for applications Nov. 2. The county plans to explore obtaining an ambulance for another local emergency medical service provider.

Baldridge said the county has already secured funding for an ambulance for Covenant, which is expected to arrive during the second or third quarter of 2027. She suggested listing another local provider as the primary recipient for the new application, with Covenant as the secondary option, to potentially improve the county’s chances of receiving funding.

The court also approved a Duro-Last roofing proposal through TIPS-USA for improvements to the Hockley County Show Barn and Women’s Building. The item had been tabled during the Oct. 19 meeting while commissioners waited for changes to the proposal.

Commissioners additionally approved transferring funds within the county attorney’s budget to compensate an assistant district attorney for additional work involving county civil matters.

The arrangement is intended to provide more accessible legal assistance for county officials while reducing the need to seek outside counsel for routine matters.
